Description
Salisbury Steak with Savory Gravy: Tender, juicy beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy—comfort food at its best.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1½ lbs ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire-style sauce
- ½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, grated onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until just combined.
- Shape into 4–6 oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and lightly caramelized, about 5–7 minutes.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire-style sauce. Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
- Return patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over the top. Simmer 5 minutes until heated through.
- Serve warm with mashed potatoes or rice.
Notes
- Tip: For a lighter gravy, reduce butter to 1 tablespoon and use low-sodium beef broth.
- Make ahead: Shape patties and refrigerate up to 1 day before cooking.
- Leftovers: Store refrigerated up to 3 days; reheat gently in a skillet.
- Optional: Add sautéed mushrooms or peas to gravy for extra flavor.
