Description

Pepper Steak with Onions: Skip the takeout and make this sizzling Pepper Steak with Onions right at home—tender beef with bell peppers and onions in a bold soy-ginger glaze, ready in 35 minutes and gluten-free.

Ingredients

Scale
  • lbs flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • ⅓ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sliced green onions (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk soy sauce, cornstarch, beef broth, brown sugar, and black pepper. Set aside.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced beef and cook 3–4 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add remaining olive oil to the skillet. Add bell peppers and onion and stir-fry for 4–5 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  4. Stir in garlic and ginger and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Return beef to the skillet and pour in the sauce mixture.
  6. Cook 2–3 minutes, stirring, until sauce thickens and coats everything evenly.
  7. Drizzle with sesame oil if using and garnish if desired. Serve warm over rice or enjoy on its own.

Notes

  • Gluten-free dish when using gluten-free soy sauce (the recipe uses low-sodium soy sauce).
  • Sesame oil is optional but adds a nice toasted flavor.
  • Serve over steamed rice or cauliflower rice for a low-carb option.
  • Can substitute flank steak with sirloin if needed.
  • Feel free to add mushrooms or snap peas for extra vegetables.
  • Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days.
