Description
Hamburger Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes is a cozy, comforting classic: savory ground beef simmered in rich gravy poured over fluffy mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- ½ cup milk, warm
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- ½ cup milk
- 1 tsp Worcestershire-style sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil and cook 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
- Drain and mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Cover and keep warm.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
- Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well. Cook 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Stir in milk and Worcestershire-style sauce. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spoon creamy hamburger gravy generously over mashed potatoes and serve warm.
Notes
- For creamier potatoes, warm the milk before adding.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, whisk in a bit more beef broth or milk.
- Leftover gravy keeps well in the fridge for 2–3 days.
- To lighten this dish, use skim milk and reduced-fat butter.
