Description

Hamburger Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes is a cozy, comforting classic: savory ground beef simmered in rich gravy poured over fluffy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup milk, warm
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire-style sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil and cook 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Cover and keep warm.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well. Cook 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  7. Stir in milk and Worcestershire-style sauce. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Spoon creamy hamburger gravy generously over mashed potatoes and serve warm.

Notes

  • For creamier potatoes, warm the milk before adding.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, whisk in a bit more beef broth or milk.
  • Leftover gravy keeps well in the fridge for 2–3 days.
  • To lighten this dish, use skim milk and reduced-fat butter.
