Description
French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole is a rich, hearty, and comforting one-dish meal inspired by classic French onion soup, featuring savory ground beef, fluffy rice, caramelized onion notes, and melted cheese in a cozy bake.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire-style sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss-style cheese
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add sliced onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 5–7 minutes until the onions are soft and lightly caramelized.
- Stir in Worcestershire-style sauce, salt, and black pepper.
- Add uncooked rice, beef broth, and cream of mushroom soup. Mix until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the rice is tender.
- Remove foil, sprinkle cheese evenly over the top, and bake uncovered for 5–10 minutes until melted and bubbly.
- Let rest for 5 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey for the beef for a lighter version.
- Using low-sodium beef broth can help reduce overall sodium.
- For extra creaminess, you can stir in a splash of milk or cream before baking.
- Leftovers reheat well; store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- To make ahead, assemble the casserole, cover, and refrigerate overnight; bake as directed the next day (you may need an extra 5–10 minutes of baking).
- Garnish with extra parsley or a pinch of paprika for color.
