Description
French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are a comforting, cheesy take on classic sloppy joes, inspired by French onion flavors and made in minutes for a cozy weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire-style sauce
- ½ cup beef broth
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 sandwich buns
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns, optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly caramelized.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Push onions to the side and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Stir onions into the beef. Add Worcestershire-style sauce, beef broth, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Lightly toast buns in butter if desired.
- Spoon beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun and top with Swiss cheese.
- Cover briefly or place under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until cheese is melted.
- Add bun tops and serve warm.
Notes
- Toasted buns add extra richness, but you can skip for a lighter version.
- Leftovers refrigerate well for up to 3 days; reheat in a skillet.
- For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free buns (check Worcestershire-style sauce for gluten).
- Leftover beef mixture can be used as topping for another sandwich or over rice.
