Description

French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are a comforting, cheesy take on classic sloppy joes, inspired by French onion flavors and made in minutes for a cozy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire-style sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 sandwich buns
  • 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns, optional)
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly caramelized.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Push onions to the side and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir onions into the beef. Add Worcestershire-style sauce, beef broth, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Lightly toast buns in butter if desired.
  6. Spoon beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun and top with Swiss cheese.
  7. Cover briefly or place under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until cheese is melted.
  8. Add bun tops and serve warm.

Notes

  • Toasted buns add extra richness, but you can skip for a lighter version.
  • Leftovers refrigerate well for up to 3 days; reheat in a skillet.
  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free buns (check Worcestershire-style sauce for gluten).
  • Leftover beef mixture can be used as topping for another sandwich or over rice.
