- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- ½ small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ¾ cup tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp Worcestershire-style sauce
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 loaf French bread, sliced in half lengthwise
- 3 tbsp butter, softened
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (for garlic bread)
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Stir in onion and garlic and cook 2–3 minutes until softened.
- Add tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire-style sauce, brown sugar, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
- In a small bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic. Spread evenly over cut sides of French bread.
- Place bread on a baking sheet and toast for 5 minutes.
- Spoon sloppy joe mixture evenly over toasted bread halves.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese generously on top.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Slice, garnish if desired, and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra crispness, broil for 1–2 minutes at the end.
- Leftover sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Use whatever shredded cheese you prefer (mozzarella or cheddar).
- To make it lighter, use lean ground beef and reduce butter.
